Ingredients:
- Basmati Rice.
- Salt, if you like it.
- Water
Danger Level: mild
Preparation:
This is an easy preparation. First of all take a cup of rice( to serve one person) and wash it thoroughly with water. Drain the water. Connect the kettle to the supply and pour about half liters of water and allow the water to boil. Add washed rice to the kettle and close the lid. Allow the kettle to switch off automatically. After 5 minutes again switch on the kettle and let it get switched off automatically. Leave for 15 minutes. Using a wooden spoon pick some rice and check it by mashing with hand. If its easy to mash, then the rice is cooked. If not continue the on off process. And the leave the kettle idle for 15 minutes. The rice must be ready by now. Always ensure there is sufficient water in the kettle. Once the rice is cooked pour it on to a bowl. Add salt to taste. The Rice is ready. If you like to eat rice with some curry, strain the water using a sieve.
Time:
For a 750W kettle the rice might take about 20 minutes.
Thanks! Had to calibrate the number of “on” presses and wait times, but this is a good idea and filled in for my broken rice cooker in a pinch!
Hi Tim,
I’m glad that it helped! The calibration joke was nice 🙂

It works!!! Thanks!
Thank you Al and really glad that you took the time to tell. Wish you a happy and fruitful ‘cooking with kettle’ ahead.
Cheers!
Didn’t rice get stuck to base??
Hi Naruto,
It does get stuck if you don’t add sufficient amount of water. I you add enough water and stir the rice occasionally, it won’t get stuck.
When I tried this, at first, it got stuck but when I added sufficient amount of water it didn’t.
Hi
Can u suggest the kettle model
First things first. All the kettles are designed for boiling water. If you are into serious cooking, you can opt for an electric cooker. By using an electric kettle for cooking, we are pushing it to its limits. As I have already mentioned, they are inherently not designed for this purpose.
I bought my kettle a few years back. I would suggest you to look for a kettle with concealed heating element. My fellow adventurers have even cooked with exposed element type kettle. But I won’t advise it.
Assuming that Google is available for you. Check for Electric kettles
“Prestige PKSS 1.0 1350 watt electric kettle” and “Orpat OEK-8147 1-Litre Cordless Kettle” are some of them.

If you are new to this, please read the ‘must read’ section in the blog. And please be safe.
Wish you a happy cooking with kettle.
My kettle doesn’t have auto on off option then at first after how many minutes I need to off the kettle
This method (switching the kettle on and off) is for controlling the amount of heat. The ideal condition to cook rice is to make sure that the water is boiling. And stir the mixture in the kettle, making sure that the rice doesn’t stick to the bottom on the kettle. Keeping it on more often will definitely make the rice stick to the bottom. (This is something we don’t want). And check the rice every three minutes or so. Feel the rice and its texture and make sure it is of the right consistency. And make sure you don’t burn your fingers. Repeat this process until the rice is cooked to the right consistency.
Does it pose any danger if I cook rice in a kettle with its heating element outside the body of kettle?
When you say, the heating element is outside. Does it mean it is an exposed type kettle? In that case, the first difficulty lies in cleaning the kettle after you are done cooking. Any kind of rice has a tendency to stick to the hot regions of the vessel (in which you are cooking). Doesn’t matter whether you are using a stove or a kettle, rice will stick to the bottom, or in your case, the heating element. It is next to impossible to clean. This is why I favour the concealed element type kettles. Cooking with a kettle is an adventure (a dangerous one). If you think it is dangerous, I wouldn’t recommend you to do it.
Cleaning your kettle is important if you are planning to cook with it again. One thing I have noticed is that washing the rice couple of times and soaking it in water for at least 20 minutes will reduce the tendency of rice to stick (from my experience).
Thank you so much; initially have been thinking until this day I had no gas and must cook so I have to inquire. Very glad, well explained and I love the way you took time to explain all the questions asked. Gracias
I am glad the resources and comments helped. Gracias.
